just about a 25-minute walk from here. the city really reminds me of san francisco, it's such a pedestrian city. we have been walking around here quite a bit. we have been talking all morning about new orleans hosting two parties. mardi gras and super bowl xlvii. and this is how they prepare for that. reporter: mardi gras is well under way in new orleans, two weeks of nonstop parades, booze and beads. but this year, the festivities serve as bookends for the super bowl. >> we control crowds better than anybody in the world hands down no question about it. and this year, we want to do something even more. >> reporter: that's because 150,000 people are expected for the big game alone and even more for the last week of mardi gras. >> our police department has more experience than any other police department in the nation in managing large crowds because we do mardi gras every year. it's the equivalent of a super bowl every year. >> reporter: they are working around the clock including the dozens of mounted officers

lining the streets in the french quarter. here safety is priority. there's one trick to keeping the peace in new orleans. >> our officers learn from their first days of service that when you're in a huge crowd of people by yourself, you have to make friends and talk to people and work with people and that crowd will support you no matter what. >> reporter: there's no doubt, it's a big under taking for the city but the jobs and the more than $400 million it's expected to rake in the next week is worth it. this is the nopd's time. we're going to eclipse everything that happened to us in the next two weeks and the men and women of this department are not going to let the people down. >> reporter: they have a good relationship with everyone. we have been checking it out the last few days. now mardi gras is going to be put on hold and we're going to focus on football and, of

course, super bowl xlvii and then guess what, when all that's said and done, we go back to mardi gras festivities, the music, food and beads. how can you forget the beads? >> i guess the guys that clean up that town are millionaires because it never stops. >> reporter: there is litter everywhere. you have to be careful, you can trip and fall but by morning it's gone. they are amazing. >> mardi gras is on hold. you finally have two football teams there. they arrived yesterday, the ravens. >> they were slow getting here. the 9ers got here before. john harbaugh if you can remember got the best of his brother jim last year in their

first meeting. he still has a way to go to even the score from some of their battles growing up. >> the team we're playing is built the same way. we have respect for the 49ers for their coach, coaching staff, players. i expect it to be played in that way. >> the ravens team is respectful of its opponents and the opponents respect them, as well. baltimore ravens and the san francisco 49ers will be heading off in just a few days, frank. we're excited. >> you know it's going to be fun. i guess on friday the two coaches will be side by side holding dual press conferences. to have brother against brother, that's going to be kind of neat. >> reporter: can you imagine what the holidays are like at their parents' house, you know? >> it's going to be tough for the parents because they are going to be elated for one son and the other one, we're sorry but that's the way it goes. >> reporter: oh, well.

okay. >> we'll see you in a couple of minutes. 6:05 now. san francisco's mayor is hoping to rally support for his crackdown on heavy drinking during the super bowl. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in the mission district where the booze fight is brewing over the mayor's recommendation and the bars are not happy. >> reporter: not too happy about it because they are thinking about their bottom line and by limiting alcohol sales, they stand to lose a lot of money especially on sunday. the mayor's suggestion is causing controversy and now one local group is speaking out calling the idea ridiculous. barbera every bashes will be packed. business owners say that they will lose money but the mayor is worried about safety especially after what happened when the giants won the world series. rowdy fans piled out of the

bars and into the streets setting fires and destroying property in the mission district. mayor lee doesn't want history to repeat itself and is asking bar owners to do their part to keep their patrons uncontrol. but some business owners say restricting alcohol is asking too much. >> as long as we're not feeding people shots of booze and sending them out on the streets, i think they'll be fine. >> reporter: now, a national group representing more than a dozen san francisco restaurants is hitting back calling the mayor's suggestion to limit sales ridiculous. part of their statement reads, "alcohol is a safe and legal product when consumed responsibly by adults. attempts to ban or restrict the sale of certain types of alcohol during a sporting event like the super bowl is unnecessary and will discourage fans from watching the game at their favorite restaurants." to be clear, the mayor is not intending to ban the sale of alcohol. he just wants different bar owners and restaurant owners to cut people off if they have been drinking too much. that way curbing any violence that could happen after the

super bowl. other things around the area, there will be hundreds of extra police officers on the streets. and other bars will be adding security and doing crowd control. definitely some good ideas as we head into the super bowl surged. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. all right, elissa, thank you so much. there is a warning out for those people in the bay area who are heading out here to new orleans. watch out for the scammers. cbs 5's cate caugiran is in our newsroom with more. good morning from new orleans. cate. >> reporter: good morning to you, michelle. there is that saying, we all heard it, if it's too good to be true, chances are, it is. a hayward couple learned it the hard way. this morning a hayward couple is out almost $6,000 because of a super bowl ticket scam. they found an ad on craigslist for four tickets. they wired the seller in baltimore $5,900. then they got this, take a look. a picture of quarterback colin kaepernick and joe flacco with a message underneath that read, enjoy the game, go ravens, lol.

cbs 5 spoke with the victims. they did not want to go on camera but tell us they have not gone to the police. now, in new orleans, scam artists there are capitalizing on unknowing tourists. this is a tactic that's a growing concern within the french quarter. the artists post weekend rentals using fake addresses or homes not up for rent. the victims pay up front and by the time they get to where they think they are staying, its too late. >> she was here for my b & b rental and she didn't believe me when i told her i didn't have a b & b and she protested and then she said and i'll show you, here, i have the paperwork. >> reporter: experts say the high demand from the super bowl is bringing out more scams. they have seen this tactic before but now it's getting worse. four french quarter groups say the scams are a by-product of the growing illegal short-term rental market in the city and stronger enforcement of that they say would put a dent in the scam. reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, cbs 5.

right now let's check the roads with liza battalones. >> the san francisco police department now doing traffic control in the area of ninth street and brannan so this is in the south of market area. a serious accident involving a dump truck and another car. looks like a driver may have been ejected from the vehicle so certainly some injuries involved with this accident and they are shutting down traffic in the area again, ninth street at brannan this could affect some muni service rolling through there. as we move on to the five five commute give another check of this very slow drive an accident westbound 580 just a couple of cars off to the right- hand shoulder but enough to gum up the commute. very heavy westbound 580 from the altamont pass, slows traffic to the dublin interchange. that's a look at a very, very busy tuesday commute. here's frank. >> all right. thank you. 6:11. a former 49er is about to go on trial for allegedly beating up a man. the strange story. the fight started over soy sauce.

30-year-old kwame harris was arrested at a restaurant in menlo park last year. investigators say harris got angry with a man, poured soy sauce over a bowl of fried rice and harris accused the man of stealing underwear and tried to pull his pants down and things got violent. >> grabbed on to him, pinned him against the glass wall of the restaurant, and began to hit him repeatedly to the face and head. >> harris pled not guilty. he will go on trial this coming april. harris by the way was the 49ers' top draft pick in 2003. it is 6:11. michelle of course is our tour guide down in new orleans. michelle, i understand you took a little tour of a cemetery of all things. >> reporter: yes, frank. it's pretty unique one of the oldest and one of the most popular tourist attractions and there's even a voodoo queen buried there. we'll have more on that coming up. you by sleep train. wishing you a cozy winter.

buried in the cemetery, marie laveau. people coming here from across the world to see her tomb. about 30 minutes ahe do, a serious accident in san francisco's south of market area ninth street at brannan involving a car and tow truck. traffic shut down in the area so expect delays. 580, a map now of westbound 580 as it rolls through the dub livermore area. it's going to be very slow. in fact, those backups beginning from grant line road in patches approaching the dublin interchange. so expect some delays getting through there. if you normally take the ace train good news for you, the altamont commuter express train is online so that's a good alternate. the bay bridge commute metering lights just switched on, very long backups now for westbound 80 from the 880 overcrossing approaching the metering lights. more sluggish traffic on the incline. so of all the bridge commutes this is the one to avoid, westbound traffic delayed at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's a look at a busy tuesday commute. here's lawrence. >> quiet in the weather the way

it was amazing walking down the street seeing the street littered with so much trash, so many beads, it was hard to walk in certain areas. most amazing is in the morning it looks completely different. those crews are getting out working hard. they clean up all the mess in this city and it just looks like there was never a party out on the streets. pretty amazing. they are ready to host super bowl xlvii. they are ready for the people expected to descend on the crescent city. good job security in sanitation in new orleans to say the least. the two football teams are finally there. 9ers got there sunday and ravens arrived yesterday afternoon, right? >> reporter: yeah. the ravens are in town now. we have the 49ers and the

ravens in town. and, of course, that means both brothers jim and john harbaugh. they faced off in a game. if you remember, they faced off talking about childhood days in michigan playing against each other in football. they held a practice session in baltimore before leaving here on the way to new orleans. we met up with john harbaugh who talked about a little sibling rivalry. >> jim was ahead of his time. he was bigger and stronger than all the kids his age. didn't hang around with the kids his age too much. he hung around with with me and my friends and he was good enough to take it to us on a regular basis. >> john harbaugh calls his brother a great competitor and there are some sibling rivalries there but they always keep it friendly.

>> have to do it, brothers, never had two brothers going toe to toe like that. thank you. bartenders are blasting mayor ed lee back home for his call to serve less booze during the super bowl on sunday. elissa harrington reports from san francisco with the booze fight over the mayor's request. >> reporter: some bar owners are comparing lee's plan to prohibition and say that limiting liquor could lose them a lot of money especially this super bowl sunday. but mayor lee isn't concerned about public safety. he says he doesn't plan to ban alcohol just wants it limited. he doesn't want to avoid a repeat of what happened after the giants won the world series. crowds turned violent. many had been drinking at the bars and crowded the streets setting fires and destroying property in the mission district. on market street a $700,000 muni bus was torched. mayor lee is asking bars to limit their hard liquor sales providing an alternative drink instead. some business owners are concerned how this could affect

at least three people have been arrested. chevron says it has paid $10 million in medical compensation claims stemming from last year's fire at the richmond refinery. most of the money went to hospitals to pay for medical exams and treatment. an estimated 15,000 people saw treatment following the august fire. president barack obama going to las vegas today to push for immigration reform. the president was planning to introduce a plan of his own but a bipartisan group of 8 senators came up with a proposal yesterday and the president is now getting behind it. that plan would beef up border security and provide a path for citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. 6:38. coming up, breaking the barrier. apple unveils a new gadget. plus, a road trip to the super bowl like none other. why our mike sugerman had to sleep in a teepee. and the market opened just about 10 minutes ago. let's take a peek at the early numbers here on a tuesday. and a bet of a mixed bag but

of an accident that just cropped up in san mateo. this is northbound 101 approaching highway 92. two-car accident blocking one of the middle lanes so traffic is going to be backed up approaching the scene. again, northbound 101 just beyond highway 92 slow traffic there. now, this accident in san francisco south of market area there is traffic control right now. ninth street at brannan. this is in south of market. fortunately no muni lines are affected. we'll let you know once we relief traffic there. mass transit is smooth. no big delays for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. that's a look at the commute. here's frank. >> thank you. new numbers suggest the bay area is a leader in recovering from the housing slump. that's a big deal. here to talk about that is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. if you are a homeowner, you are applauding right now, jason. >> reporter: frank, i think you have to feel more confident about the value of your homecoming back to where it once was. this might even prompt more people to get into the market to actually sell their homes.

bay area showing some of the strongest price gains in the past year. according to kay schiller index, the bay area which encompasses nine counties up 1.4% in november from the month before. that tied phoenix for the biggest monthly gain. up 12.7% from a year earlier the second biggest gain after phoenix, up nearly 23%. yahoo reporting its earnings after the closing bell yesterday. good news for ceo marissa mayer who is six months on the job. yahoo topped expectations. overall 2012 it was the first revenue gain since 2008. yahoo shares are up on that news. apple announcing this morning that it's going to offer a new ipad that doubles the storage capacity of its largest model. that's a 128 gigabytes now available. it will go on sale february 5. wi-fi only version for $799. and the cell-connected version for $929. let's see how the market is doing off to a pretty flat start.

right now the dow is up by about 10 points. nasdaq is falling 10. s&p trading flat at 1500. apple shares up 1% on the new offering and yahoo up .5% off its earnings report. >> thank you, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. cbs sparing no expense, michelle griego actually got to fly to new orleans over the weekend. one of our reporters not so lucky. mike sugerman actually had to pack up his car and got his wife in the car and they are driving to the superdome and he joins us live on the telephone right now on a road trip to beat all road trips. mike, tell us where you are. >> reporter: well, i can't really complain. i am in roswell, new mexico. i have yet to get beamed up. this of course is the ufo capital of the world. 1947 there was a claim that ufos landed here and they have been making a buck off that ever since. there's a ufo museum which i'm going to try to visit today but i'm also seeing a lot of 9er

fans as i wear my sweatshirt and hat. people are high fiving me and giving me all kinds of good news and handshakes and it's really terrific. so as you said, i started this drive with my wife janice on -- a long time ago, friday. and here's what the first leg looked like. >> really? >> honey, most of it's yours. >> she's right. [ car starts ] >> road trip! ♪ [ music ]♪ ♪ i been driving all night ♪ ♪ on the road again ♪ >> reporter: long road to the big easy started hard. but things looked up when we got to our first stop. >> the wigwam motel. >> reporter: the wigwam motel about 460 miles from the bay area in san bernardino. >> this property is located on route 66. a gentleman by the name of frank redford loved the concept of teepees and built it for people to stay on their travels. >> reporter: built in 1949 one of a network on the route now one of only two. the family took it over 7 years

ago. >> it's a piece of americana you don't see anymore. >> reporter: heidi and her husband stayed the night we were there, they're from antioch. >> as a little kid we used to drive by and saw the teepees and always wanted to go in and see them. and so i told my husband about them. so we just booked a room and came down and stayed last night. >> reporter: she had her reservations. >> i heard this was actually a hooker hotel. >> reporter: there was a dark time in the '80s but all that is changed. >> inside it's a completely normal room like you would stay at any motel, you know, refrigerator, tv, bed. >> reporter: kumar is a big cigar smoker. when he found out i enjoyed one now and again he had the perfect smoke for me because of the label. >> you are going to the super bowl. >> yeah. >> and the colors represent the team that's going to be winning the super bowl this year. >> reporter: red and gold. >> red and gold, my man. >> reporter: all right, baby. we had a great time at the wigwam.

[ car starts ] >> road trip! >> reporter: next stop? we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. and that turned out to be the london bridge which is now in lake havasu city, arizona. but today, after stopping at the ufo museum, we are off to amarillo, texas, where i will attempt to eat a 72-ounce steak. it's $72 unless you finish it. and then it's free. so i am bulking up right now because they tell me, don't starve yourself because your stomach will shrink so you have to eat a lot before you get there. any hints, frank? >> i was going to say i'm glad cbs has a good medical plan. that's five pounds of cow right there, my friend. the fog is really coming off of the mississippi river. and lots of people are gathering along jackson square. that's where we are right across from jackson square, right behind me is st. louis cathedral. and that's been there since the 1700s. at one point it burned down because there was a big fire near the french quarter. but they had to rebuild it again. beautiful cathedral. we hope to go inside in just -- hopefully maybe later today or at least by tomorrow. but we're working hard out here and we're finally seeing some football fans, frank. >> i know. you had that one you interviewed earlier. actually from new orleans that happens to be a 9er fan. we are going to share a couple of photos now and you can chime in if you would like. matthew in a 49er helmet. check him out right there. he will grow into it soon. matthew a huge 49ers fan and so is 4-year-old johnnie, his helmet a little bit of a better fit there. a couple of younger generation 9ers fans. rocky has exhaust the himself rooting for the 49ers.
